Why I built Newport, and why we do this the way we do.
Jean was 50 when she had a massive stroke.
She was funny, witty, the life of every room she walked into. Then everything changed overnight.
She lived alone in a three-story house in the Cicero neighborhood of Chicago. After the stroke, that house was no longer safe for her. She had lost most of her capacity and could no longer communicate the way she used to.
My family was spread out. I was in Colorado. Others were in Atlanta. We flew to Chicago, sat down together, and faced the same three questions every family in this situation faces.
Where does she go for care?
Who takes care of her?
How do we pay for it?
The house was the answer to that last question. But it needed work, and we could not wait months for a traditional sale. Investors were already circling.
A placement agent helped us find the right care community for Jean. And a buyer we found through a local church stepped in and made the sale simple, fair, and fast. That was the relief my family needed. It stayed with me.
At the time, I was in a tech sales career. Successful on paper. Unfulfilled in every other way.
When COVID hit and I was laid off, I finally knew what I wanted to do next. I wanted to give other families the option mine was fortunate to find.
I have walked this road. I know the sale can feel stressful, and for some families even a little shameful. The house is never just a house. It is where kids were raised, where holidays happened, where grandchildren played. For many families it is the proudest symbol of a life built together.
